Musician Nicky Brennan suffered from a tongue tie that restricted his breath, singing and even his digestion, until a surgical procedure last year corrected the problem and brought him some much-needed relief.
Tongue tie is for life, not just for babies. Ankyloglossia, as the condition is otherwise known, occurs when an unusually short, thick or tight band of tissue called the lingual frenulum tethers the bottom of the tongue’s tip to the floor of the mouth.
It is most often diagnosed and remedied shortly after birth in order to support successful breastfeeding, but left untreated, it can have debilitating effects in later childhood and even adulthood.
