Our
services
We offer the full spectrum of tongue tie care in Ireland - from assessment and diagnosis through to surgical release, feeding therapy, and post-operative rehabilitation. Services are available for patients of all ages, from newborn to adult, at our main clinic in Clonmel and our Saturday outreach clinic in Naas.
Tongue tie presents differently across different life stages - and so does our approach to treatment. Each pathway is tailored to the age-specific anatomy, co-morbidities, and functional needs of that group. All pathways begin with a comprehensive evaluation and end with post-operative rehabilitation.
Birth – 12 weeks
Infants - 0 to 12 weeks
The most common presentation at NTTC. Anterior and posterior tongue tie in the newborn period causes feeding difficulties that have immediate consequences for both infant and mother. Our pathway includes functional physiotherapy assessment, IBCLC feeding evaluation, medical consultation, CO₂ laser frenectomy, and structured post-operative feeding support.
3 – 6 months
Infants - 3 to 6 months
At this age, the frenulum is thicker and more vascular - CO₂ laser alone is insufficient. NTTC is the only clinic in Ireland offering frenuloplasty under conscious sedation for this age group, with suture closure to reduce reattachment risk. The infant breathes independently throughout, without general anaesthetic. More extensive pre- and post-operative preparation is required.
6 months – 16 years
Children - 6 months to 16 years
Tongue tie in older infants and children presents with speech difficulties, fussy eating, mouth breathing, sleep problems, dental crowding, and behaviour challenges. The NTTC pathway includes structured myofunctional therapy, physiotherapy, and frenuloplasty under local or general anaesthetic as appropriate for age. Extensive pre- and post-operative therapy is central to good outcomes.
Adults
Adults
Many adults reach us after years of unexplained jaw pain, headaches, neck and shoulder tension, difficulty swallowing, snoring, or sleep-disordered breathing - often having been missed in infancy. The adult pathway involves detailed functional physiotherapy assessment, medical consultation, fascial bodywork, frenuloplasty under local anaesthetic, and a structured post-operative rehabilitation programme.
