Breastfeeding support from a clinician who understands the full picture of infant oral function. Our IBCLCs bring a clinical depth to lactation consultations that goes beyond positioning and attachment. They assess the mechanics of the feed, the function of the tongue and lip, and the whole feeding relationship.

Painful feeding

Persistent nipple pain, cracked or damaged nipples, sharp or burning discomfort during feeds

Latch difficulties

Shallow latch, slipping off the breast, inability to maintain a seal, or latch that looks correct but causes pain

Supply concerns

Low or declining milk supply, concerns about milk transfer, or oversupply and associated discomfort

Slow weight gain

Baby feeding frequently but not gaining weight as expected, or dropping centiles despite appearing to feed well

Blocked ducts and mastitis

Recurrent blocked ducts or mastitis that is not resolving despite standard management

Returning to breastfeeding

Relactation, transitioning from expressed milk or formula, or re-establishing supply after illness or separation

Breast refusal

Baby who was previously feeding well and has begun refusing the breast, or who has never latched successfully

IBCLC: International Board Certified Lactation Consultant

What it means to see
an IBCLC

The IBCLC credential is the international gold standard for lactation practice. To hold it, a clinician must complete a minimum of 1,000 hours of clinical lactation experience, pass a rigorous international examination, and recertify every five years through continuing education and practice.

At the NTTC, all seven of our IBCLCs hold this credential alongside their primary professional qualification: Consultant Paediatrician, Chartered Physiotherapist, registered nurse, or midwife. This means your lactation consultation is provided by a clinician who can assess the whole picture, not just the breastfeeding in isolation.

Evidence-based support for breastfeeding challenges

Our IBCLC-qualified lactation consultants provide thorough, compassionate assessment and practical support for mothers and infants experiencing difficulties with breastfeeding. Consultations are embedded within NTTC's multidisciplinary pathway, meaning we can identify and address all contributing factors — not just the feeding technique.

What a Consultation Includes

🔍

Comprehensive Feeding Assessment

Observation of a full breastfeed, evaluation of latch and positioning, assessment of milk transfer, and review of feeding history and maternal breast health.

📋

Personalised Feeding Plan

A practical, evidence-based management plan tailored to your situation — including positioning strategies, supplementation guidance if required, and clear follow-up steps.

🤝

Tongue Tie Pathway Integration

Where tongue or lip tie is suspected, our IBCLC works alongside Dr Justin Roche to assess oral structure and feeding function together, ensuring a fully coordinated approach to assessment and aftercare.

📍

Follow-up Support

Ongoing lactation support following tongue tie division or other interventions, including guidance on milk supply, reintroduction of breastfeeding, and oral exercises to support healing.
